Classic mode
Classic is where every group should start. Civilians get the secret word, the spy gets only the knowledge that they are the spy, and the whole round turns on one question: can the spy bluff for eight minutes without knowing what everyone is talking about?
Civilians see
The secret word, with its category.
The spy sees
Their role, and no word. The category appears only if you switch on “Show category to the spy”.
When to pick it
First games, mixed groups and quick rounds. It is the simplest mode to explain, because the whole rule fits in one sentence.
Tips for bluffing and catching
- Wait one beat before answering and let someone else commit first.
- Echo the vocabulary of the previous answer instead of inventing your own.
- Ask questions that sound specific but could fit many words, such as “How often do you do that?”
- If the category is switched on, use it as a fence: stay inside it and never go narrower than the others.

Questions
Does the spy know the category?
Only if the game setting “Show category to the spy” is on. It is off by default, so the spy sees just their role.
Is Classic better with few or many players?
Both work. With three or four players the spy is easy to corner, so keep questions broad. In larger groups the spy can hide in the noise.
Can there be more than one spy?
Yes. The limit is a third of the players, rounded up. Turn on “Spies know each other” if you want them to coordinate.
